Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced an agreement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) for the joint development of a project that will examine how vessel steering gear with new sensing capability and big data analysis can contribute to energy efficient operations.
The project will explore how KHI-developed steering gear equipped with sensors to monitor pressure, flow rate, temperature of hydraulic oil, consumed power and more, combined with high-speed data acquisition can improve efficiency and reliability of a vessel.
The steering gear equipment will be installed on a newbuild very large crude carrier (VLCC), which will be delivered to MOL once construction at KHI is complete.
The high-speed data acquisition will collect data from the steering gear, as well as from other vessel parameters, including speed, course, engine load, and rudder angle, throughout the vessel’s voyage.
It is expected that in-depth analysis of this data will lead to improvements in vessel reliability and energy-saving operation.
Project completion is expected for the end of March 2021.
