China has officially banned the use of open-loop scrubbers in the country’s Emission Control Areas (ECAs) from January 1, 2019.
The ban will prohibit vessels from using open-loop scrubbers that discharge wastewater. The ban does not apply to closed-loop scrubbers.
Vessels installed with open-loop mode only scrubbers will have to switch to an alternative fuel when operating in China’s ECAs where the maximum permitted sulphur content is 0.5 per cent.
This ban on open-loop scrubbers from China comes following the same decision made by Singapore late last year.
