BIMCO confirms China has not placed a full ban on scrubbers

BIMCO has revealed that China’s ban on open-loop scrubbers in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) may extend to cover all Chinese waters in the near future.

BIMCO said that sources familiar with the open-loop scrubber ban have confirmed that while the ban is currently limited to China’s ECAs, a full ban on open-loop scrubbers is not out of the question.

The ban on discharging wastewater from scrubbers covers inland ECAs, port waters under coastal DECA and the Bohai Bay waters only.

In November, regulators said ships equipped with scrubbers were permitted to carry and use high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO), subject to emissions monitoring, and that scrubber waste and water must be disposed according to relevant regulation. BIMCO has confirmed that this remains the case.
