Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has demonstrated the first marine gas oil (MGO) and marine diesel oil (MDO) mono-fuel engine.
The UEC50LSJ-EGR engine complies fully with nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements, under the concept of JUMP (J-ENG, Unique Marine Power).
The engine, which is subsidised by The Nippon Foundation, provides compliance with the IMO’s 0.5 per cent sulphur cap to enter into force January 1, 2020.
According to J-ENG, the engine will reduce fuel oil consumption compared with conventional engines using MGO and improve EEDI. MGO also benefits from not requiring heating facilities, meaning that running costs can be reduced during operation.
Performance optimisation and reliability verification tests are being conducted, and the intended targets will be achieved judging from the current test results.
J-ENG will contribute to marine and shipping industries by meeting global environmentally friendliness through further tests and fine tuning.
