“K” Line’s new coal carrier Corona Youthful has begun an operational trial using a binary cycle power generation system to recover waste heat energy and optimise fuel consumption.

The binary cycle power generation system, developed by Kobe Steel, is a waste heat recovery electric power generation system that uses compression heat by scavenging air from the main engine, This reduces fuel consumption of the diesel generator engine.

The trial of the technology on-board “K” Line’s 91,000 DWT newbuild forms part of its Environmental Vision 2050, which aims to improve operational efficiency of its ships and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. According to “K” Line, the binary cycle power generation system is one of the most efficient systems to help the company achieve its emissions reduction goals.
