Motive Power Marine’s E-Port Shipyard joins environmental certification program

Motive Power Marine’s E-Port Shipyard, Tacoma has joined the Green Marine environmental certification program for shipyards.

Green Marine is a North American environmental certification program for the maritime industry that encourages members to surpass regulatory requirements and reduce their environmental footprint. To receive certification, participants must benchmark their annual environmental performance through Green Marine’s environmental program self-evaluation guides. They also need to have their results verified by an accredited external verifier and agree to publication of their individual results online.

Ben McDowell, Motive Power Marine’s president, explained: “We strongly feel while compliance standards are good, they don’t go far enough to provide mechanisms for a path toward sustaining a course of continuous improvement, which is the way the Green Marine framework is structured.”

Motive Power Marine is the first shipyard in the State of Washington, and the second in the United States, to seek the Green Marine Certification.

“We are very pleased to welcome Motive Power Marine, which significantly boosts the participation by shipyards and is very timely as Green Marine is working on the development of a new performance indicator on ship recycling,” said David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director. “It is also rewarding to see tenants of our port participants, such as the Northwest Seaport Alliance in this case, becoming members as a result of our program encouraging synergies.”
