Belgian shipowner confirms construction of hydrogen-powered vessel

Antwerp headquartered shipowner Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB) and Japanese construction firm Tsuneishi Facilities & Craft (TFC) have agreed to build a hydrogen powered ferry to assist shipping’s decarbonisation efforts and support Japan’s vision to become a leading hydrogen society by 2050.

TFC will contribute its shipbuilding expertise while CMB’s knowledge of marine hydrogen systems will be used to develop a revolutionary ship that is expected to mark a milestone in the journey towards zero carbon shipping.

After receiving the necessary regulatory approval, the ship will be built at TFC’s facilities in Onomichi, Japan and is expected to be delivered in 2021.
