Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced an agreement with Vale International to conduct a joint study on the installation of a Rotor Sail onboard a 200,000-ton class in-service bulk carrier to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The bulk carrier, which mainly transports iron ore for steel production, will be installed with the tall cylindrical Rotor Sails that make use of the Magnus Effect to rotate airflow and generate a forward thrust force perpendicular to the apparent wind direction. This delivers additional thrust to the vessel, which can be used to provide additional vessel speed or maintain vessel speed by reducing power from the main engine.
The joint study team will examine and verify the number of Rotor Sails to be installed and the effect of GHG reduction, working closely with UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies, the manufacturer of the Rotor Sails.
